Panel Upgrades & Rewiring

Does Your Home Have Enough Power?

The average American home built before 1980 was wired for 60 or 100 amps — a fraction of what today’s households demand. A modern home with central air conditioning, an EV charger, a home office, and a washer/dryer needs at least 200 amps to operate safely and efficiently. Running an undersized panel causes nuisance tripping at best, fire hazards at worst.

We upgrade panels throughout Somerset County, handling every permit through your specific municipal construction department. We know the review timelines, the inspection schedules, and the specific requirements for each of the 17 municipalities we serve — from Bridgewater’s 20-day review cycle to Watchung’s Tuesday/Thursday-only inspection windows.

Signs You Need a Panel Upgrade

  • Breakers trip frequently or won’t reset
  • Lights flicker when appliances run
  • You have a fuse box instead of breakers
  • Your panel is Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic
  • You’re adding an EV charger or major appliance
  • Your home is over 40 years old and hasn’t been upgraded

EV Charger Installation

Level 2 Home EV Charging — Installed & Permitted

A Level 2 EV charger (240V) charges your vehicle 5-8x faster than a standard 120V outlet — a full charge overnight rather than three days. For commuters on the Raritan Valley Line or I-287 corridor, it’s the difference between arriving home to a fully charged vehicle and managing range anxiety every morning.

We install every major brand — ChargePoint, Wallbox, JuiceBox, Grizzl-E, Tesla Wall Connector — and we assess your panel capacity before recommending a circuit. If your panel needs upgrading first, we do both jobs together in one permit. We file all required municipal construction permits, coordinate the inspection, and submit your PSE&G rebate documentation the same day as inspection sign-off.

What’s Included in Every EV Install

  • Panel capacity assessment
  • Dedicated 240V circuit (40A or 50A)
  • Conduit run to garage or driveway
  • NEMA 14-50 outlet or hardwired charger
  • Municipal construction permit
  • Inspection coordination and attendance
  • PSE&G & NJBPU rebate paperwork

Whole-Home Rewiring

Old Wiring Is the #1 Cause of Residential Electrical Fires

Knob-and-tube wiring — used in homes built before approximately 1950 — has no ground wire, degrades over decades, and is incompatible with modern insulation. Most insurance companies now surcharge or deny coverage for homes with active knob-and-tube. Aluminum wiring, installed in many homes between 1965 and 1975 due to a copper shortage, expands and contracts differently than copper, creating loose connections that arc and spark over time.

Somerset County has a significant stock of pre-1970 homes — particularly in Raritan, Bound Brook, Somerville, Manville, and North Plainfield. We assess, document, and rewire these homes correctly: whole-house rewiring with modern copper wire, new grounded outlets throughout, updated panel, and every wall closed properly after the work is done.

Knob & Tube

Pre-1950 homes. No ground wire. Insulation incompatible. Insurance issues. Full replacement recommended.

Aluminum Wiring

1965–1975 homes. Loose connections, arcing risk. COPALUM crimp or full replacement. Fire hazard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Our Services

Yes, always. Any electrical work beyond the most minor cosmetic changes requires a permit under New Jersey’s Uniform Construction Code. Unpermitted work creates liability at resale, voids homeowner’s insurance, and can result in fines. We pull all permits through your specific municipal construction department and attend every inspection.
A 100-amp to 200-amp panel upgrade in Somerset County typically runs $1,800 to $3,200 fully permitted and inspected. Variables include the age of your home, the distance from the meter to the panel, and whether the service entrance cable needs replacement. For larger homes in Martinsville or Basking Ridge requiring 400-amp service, costs run $3,500 to $6,000. We always provide a free written estimate before any work begins.
Most Level 2 EV charger installations are completed in one day. If your panel needs upgrading first, we can often do both jobs in a single day depending on the scope. The permit and inspection process adds time — typically 1-3 weeks from permit application to final inspection sign-off — but the charger is usually operational before final inspection for testing purposes.
Knob-and-tube wiring in its original, undisturbed state is not necessarily immediately dangerous. The problems arise when it has been modified over decades (spliced incorrectly, buried under insulation, overloaded), when insulation has degraded, or when modern loads are placed on circuits not designed for them. More practically: most insurance companies will no longer write policies on homes with active knob-and-tube, which creates a serious problem at sale or renewal. We recommend a full assessment before making any decision.
We serve 17 communities across Somerset, Middlesex, and Union counties: Bridgewater, Raritan, Somerville, Bound Brook, Warren, Basking Ridge, Martinsville, Hillsborough, Montgomery, Manville, North Plainfield, Watchung, Green Brook, Bedminster, Far Hills, Peapack-Gladstone, and Dunellen. See our full service area page for details on each community including permit office information.
Call us immediately for: burning or melting smell from an outlet, panel, or wall; visible sparks or arcing; outlets or switches that are hot to the touch; circuit breakers that won’t reset or trip immediately after resetting; flickering lights accompanied by a buzzing sound; and complete power loss to your home. These are not situations to wait on — call (908) 505-5192 any hour of the day.
